“Because no child should learn on an empty stomach.”

For over a decade, HelpGate Foundation (HGF) has remained steadfast in its mission to feed the hungry and uplift vulnerable lives. At our inception, our efforts were directed toward providing meals for indigent and drug-addicted adults struggling to survive on the streets.

However, the realities that followed the COVID-19 pandemic opened our eyes to a deeper and more urgent truth — many children in our communities go to school hungry. Through our SPELL Initiative (Substance-abuse Prevention through Entrepreneurship, Leadership and Learning), designed to educate and empower teenagers against drug abuse, we discovered that hunger is one of the most silent yet potent triggers of vulnerability among children.

A hungry child cannot learn, concentrate, or dream. Hunger robs them not only of nutrition but of hope, attention, and ambition. Sadly, in many schools across Lagos, children sit in class daily with empty stomachs — a reality that inspired us to take decisive action.

The Feed A Child (FAC) Project

In response, HelpGate Foundation launched the Feed A Child Project (FAC) — a compassionate initiative aimed at ensuring that no child is left behind because of hunger.

Through this programme, we currently feed pupils in 10 public primary schools across Surulere, Lagos, twice every week. On each visit, our team serves nutritious, freshly prepared meals of 25 plates of food for each school, bringing smiles, energy, and encouragement to classrooms that once echoed with the quiet sighs of hunger.

The project has been officially approved by the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the Education Secretary’s Office, Surulere, affirming its credibility and alignment with the state’s vision for child welfare and education.
